After the ectoplasmic and cataplasmatic indigestion of the Pope’s visit to Madrid and Barcelona, all I can think about is the embarrassment — and about remembering when the Church was the world’s main source of art. They were the patrons of everything: Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo, Botticelli, Rubens… right up to the twentieth century with Matisse, Chagall, Tàpies. The list is enormous and crucial.

Now, however, while we have seen the blessing of one of the towers of Gaudí’s Sagrada Família, let us not forget that the current Sagrada Família is more Calatrava than anything else — a grand pastiche, impressive, but a pastiche.

And as for the Pope’s visit itself — it’s not as if we saw much art. What we did see was the art of the grotesque: Antonio Banderas in a kind of frenzy more befitting an evangelical sect than the Holy Catholic Church, which owns one of the most art-filled museums in the world in the Vatican and that extraordinary thing called the Sistine Chapel.

Instead of the former glory, we got absurd dances, cringe-worthy rap singers, pseudo-football spectacles, coloured drones and lots of flags. Not to mention the total capitulation of the politicians of this supposedly secular country.

In short: if we had never known the Church’s artistic past, watching what happened now we could never imagine what they once sponsored. If it had been a TV channel like Telecinco, a everything-for-a-euro bazaar, a gym, or TikTok profiles, we’d understand it.

And for the record: I once ran into Pope Francis, greeted him, and wished him a long life.
