This painting is a turning point in my career as a painter. A before and an after, just like having a child. An ascending track facing a disorder of colour, an explosion of new life and a new universe in front of you, not without uncertainty and confusion. It is an explosion in the positive sense, yet just as disruptive. The magic of the unknown and the beautiful. The rush of life before you. Nothing is the same, you are no longer the same, the deconstruction of your identity in order to be able to raise a miracle. The work is large-scale, 195x130 cm, oil on canvas. It is my most important work.

A large-format oil on canvas in which Sáez translates the arrival of a child into colour and composition: a track rising towards a burst of chromatic energy, between euphoria and disorientation. An autobiographical painting, in the line of a body of work that has always started from lived experience, and which the artist himself considers the most important of his career.

Appraisal

«Después de tener un hijo» («After Having a Child») is a painting that reads from the bottom up. At the base, an almost empty plane of raw canvas crossed by magenta lines converging towards the horizon: the order and silence of the life before. A horizontal line marks the threshold and, once it is crossed, colour overflows. A soft, blurred pink band, like a shaky photograph, gives way to a great mass of oranges, yellows and lilacs surrounded by deep blues.

Within so much joy, small navy-blue marks and repeated vertical strokes appear, like a count of days and nights: the uncertainty the artist himself acknowledges in the experience. At the top, a thickly impasted yellow dot acts as a sun or a source of light, and the magenta drips hanging from the edge bring the colour of the track back into the picture.

The painting sits within the colour tradition of Matisse and the Fauves and Hockney's landscapes, but with Sáez's direct, graphic line, visible even in the title handwritten on the canvas itself. In person it is the paint that stands out: lively oil, with impasto, the weave of the canvas showing and dry-brush edges. A centrepiece for anyone looking for a work with a true story behind it.
