Some works are not made to decorate. They are made to keep someone alive.

This is a very special work. It is the tree that my father planted when he was still alive. I spent more than ten years without seeing it, and when I finally saw it again it had grown enormous — it had survived alone, as I had. When I realised that, I cried for a long time. From that day on, that tree has been the symbol of both my father and me. We are there together.

A triptych made with oil wax crayons on Fabriano paper — 350g, 150 × 100 cm (59 × 39 in). One of the largest and most personal works in the entire collection. The oil wax crayon is a medium that gives the surface an extraordinary physical density: the marks are direct, warm, built up in layers. At this scale, on this weight of paper, the result is something between painting and drawing — a medium that holds memory the way a tree holds its rings.

The work is framed with glass, ready to hang. The frame is part of the work: it gives the four panels their unity and their permanence.

Juanjo Sáez is a Barcelona-based author, illustrator and animation director with over 30 years of professional practice. His animated feature Heavies Tendres has won awards at Fantasia Montreal, Animest Bucharest and Anilogue Budapest. His book El Arte has been translated into six languages; its original notebooks were acquired by the MNAC (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya). He holds a weekly column in Diari Ara since its founding in 2010.

Esta obra es muy especial. Es el árbol que plantó mi padre cuando todavía vivía. Estuve más de diez años sin verlo y cuando volví a verlo estaba enorme: había sobrevivido solo, como yo. Cuando me di cuenta de eso, lloré mucho. Desde ese día, ese árbol es para mí el símbolo de mi padre y de mí. Ahí estamos juntos.

Un cuádriptico hecho con ceras grasas sobre papel Fabriano de 350g — 150 × 100 cm. Una de las obras de mayor tamaño y más personales de toda la colección. La cera grasa es un medio que da a la superficie una densidad física extraordinaria: las marcas son directas, cálidas, construidas en capas. A esta escala, sobre este gramaje de papel, el resultado es algo entre la pintura y el dibujo — un medio que retiene la memoria como un árbol retiene sus anillos.

La obra va enmarcada con cristal, lista para colgar. El marco forma parte de la obra: da unidad y permanencia a los cuatro paneles.
