A diptych — two works that belong together, and together say something neither could alone. Mother and father: not as an ideal, not as a symbol, but as the specific physical fact of the two people who existed before you could remember them existing. Sáez reduces them to their essential gesture. Two figures, two pieces of paper, one inseparable truth.

Made with Indian ink and anilines on 100% cotton watercolour paper — 36 × 51 cm each. The anilines give each image its atmosphere and warmth; the ink gives it its line and structure. Together they produce two works that breathe as one.

Juanjo Sáez is a Barcelona-based author, illustrator and animation director with over 30 years of professional practice. His animated feature Heavies Tendres has won awards at Fantasia Montreal, Animest Bucharest and Anilogue Budapest. His book El Arte has been translated into six languages; its original notebooks were acquired by the MNAC (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya). He holds a weekly column in Diari Ara since its founding in 2010.

Mamá y papá: no como ideal, no como símbolo, sino como el hecho físico y concreto de las dos personas que existieron antes de que pudieras recordar que existían. Sáez los reduce a su gesto esencial. Tinta china y anilinas sobre papel de acuarela de algodón 100% — 36 × 51 cm cada pieza. Las anilinas dan a cada imagen su atmósfera y su calor; la tinta le da la línea y la estructura. Juntas producen dos obras que respiran como una sola.
