A dog painted the way dogs actually are — joyful, excessive, full of colour.

Indian ink and anilines on Chinese Xuan rice paper — 137.5 × 69 cm (54 × 27 in), imported directly from China. The same paper used for millennia in Chinese calligraphy and ink painting: a material that absorbs and breathes differently from any Western paper, giving each mark an irreversible vitality.

Sáez paints this dog not as a portrait in the conventional sense, but as an explosion of character. The anilines give the image its colour and atmosphere; the ink gives it its line and energy. The result is a work that captures what a dog really is — not its appearance, but its presence.

Acquired by a private collector for €1,250.

Juanjo Sáez is a Barcelona-based author, illustrator and animation director with over 30 years of professional practice. His animated feature Heavies Tendres has won awards at Fantasia Montreal, Animest Bucharest and Anilogue Budapest. His book El Arte has been translated into six languages; its original notebooks were acquired by the MNAC (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya).

Tinta china y anilinas sobre papel Xuan de arroz importado de China — 137,5 × 69 cm. El mismo papel usado durante milenios en la caligrafía y la pintura de tinta china: un material que absorbe y respira de forma diferente a cualquier papel occidental, dando a cada marca una vitalidad irreversible.

Sáez pinta este perro no como un retrato en el sentido convencional, sino como una explosión de carácter. Las anilinas dan a la imagen su color y su atmósfera; la tinta le da la línea y la energía. El resultado es una obra que captura lo que un perro realmente es — no su apariencia, sino su presencia.

Adquirida por un coleccionista privado por 1.250€.
