A river does not force its way. It finds the path that already exists.

This is the largest work in the collection — and one of the most singular. A diptych of two pieces, each measuring 137.5 × 69 cm, displayed side by side to form a total work of 275 × 69 cm. Nearly three metres wide. At that scale it does not hang on a wall so much as become the wall.

The support is Chinese Xuan — the paper used for millennia in Chinese calligraphy and ink painting, imported directly from China. One of the four treasures of Chinese culture, it is a material with a specific memory: it absorbs, breathes and holds the mark differently from any Western paper. When Sáez works on it with Indian ink and copper acrylic, the result is a surface that feels ancient and immediate at once.

The serpent river — a form that coils, flows and finds its own way. In Eastern tradition the serpent is not a symbol of danger but of wisdom, renewal and the continuous movement of life. The river is time itself. Together the two pieces make an image about trust: the trust that the path exists even when you cannot see it.

Juanjo Sáez is a Barcelona-based author, illustrator and animation director with over 30 years of professional practice. His animated feature Heavies Tendres has won awards at Fantasia Montreal, Animest Bucharest and Anilogue Budapest. His book El Arte has been translated into six languages; its original notebooks were acquired by the MNAC (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya). He holds a weekly column in Diari Ara since its founding in 2010.

Un río no fuerza el camino. Encuentra el que ya existe.

Esta es la obra de mayor tamaño de la colección — y una de las más singulares. Un díptico de dos piezas, cada una de 137,5 × 69 cm, colocadas una al lado de la otra para formar una obra total de 275 × 69 cm. Casi tres metros de ancho. A esa escala no cuelga en una pared: se convierte en la pared.

El soporte es papel Xuan chino — el papel usado durante milenios en la caligrafía y la pintura de tinta china, importado directamente de China. Uno de los cuatro tesoros de la cultura china, es un material con una memoria específica: absorbe, respira y retiene la marca de forma diferente a cualquier papel occidental. Cuando Sáez trabaja sobre él con tinta china y acrílico cobre, el resultado es una superficie que se siente antigua e inmediata a la vez.

La serpiente río — una forma que serpentea, fluye y encuentra su propio camino. En la tradición oriental la serpiente no es un símbolo de peligro sino de sabiduría, renovación y el movimiento continuo de la vida. El río es el tiempo mismo. Juntas las dos piezas forman una imagen sobre la confianza: la confianza en que el camino existe aunque no puedas verlo.
