In many cultures, the elephant symbolises family: it lives in closely bonded groups, protects its young fiercely, and never forgets.

A painting Sáez found in his studio — made before the birth of his son Pedro, when the idea of family was already forming, already present. The elephant as metaphor for a love that is structural: not sentiment, but architecture.

Made with wax crayons, anilines and Indian ink on Chinese Xuan paper — the paper used for millennia in Chinese calligraphy and ink painting, imported directly from China. The combination of mediums is deliberate: the wax gives warmth and texture, the anilines open the image with atmosphere, and the ink holds the line. On Xuan paper, each mark is irreversible and alive.

Juanjo Sáez is a Barcelona-based author, illustrator and animation director with over 30 years of professional practice. His animated feature Heavies Tendres has won awards at Fantasia Montreal, Animest Bucharest and Anilogue Budapest. His book El Arte has been translated into six languages; its original notebooks were acquired by the MNAC (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya).

En varias culturas, el elefante simboliza la familia porque vive en grupos muy unidos, protege a los suyos con ferocidad, y nunca olvida.

La encontré en el taller — hecha antes del nacimiento de Pedro, cuando la idea de familia ya estaba formándose, ya estaba presente. El elefante como metáfora del tipo de amor que es estructural: no sentimiento, sino arquitectura.

Hecha con ceras, anilinas y tinta china sobre papel Xuan chino — el papel usado durante milenios en la caligrafía y la pintura de tinta china, importado directamente de China. La combinación de medios es deliberada: las ceras dan calor y textura, las anilinas abren la imagen con atmósfera, y la tinta sostiene la línea. Sobre papel Xuan, cada marca es irreversible y viva.
