Acrylic and enamel on canvas. Sáez made this work as a student at the Escola Massana in Barcelona in the 1990s — one of Spain’s most rigorous art schools. It belongs to his formative years: before the illustration career, before the animation, before the books and the awards. This is the painting of someone who is still discovering what kind of artist he will become.
That quality of openness, of not yet knowing, is still visible in the work. It has not been revised. It has not been corrected. It is exactly what it was.

Juanjo Sáez is a Barcelona-based author, illustrator and animation director with over 30 years of professional practice. His animated feature Heavies Tendres has won awards at Fantasia Montreal, Animest Bucharest and Anilogue Budapest. His book El Arte has been translated into six languages; its original notebooks were acquired by the MNAC (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya).

Acrílico y esmalte sobre lienzo. Sáez hizo esta obra como estudiante en la Escola Massana de Barcelona en los años 90 — una de las escuelas de arte más rigurosas de España. Pertenece a sus años de formación: antes de la carrera de ilustración, antes de la animación, antes de los libros y los premios. Es la pintura de alguien que todavía está descubriendo qué tipo de artista va a ser.
Esa calidad de apertura, de todavía no saber, sigue siendo visible en la obra. No ha sido revisada. No ha sido corregida. Es exactamente lo que era.
