Two figures, side by side. The geometry is spare, the palette restrained — but the weight between them is unmistakable. It is a painting about parents: not as an ideal, but as a presence. The specific, physical fact of the people who were there before you could remember them being there.
This is one of the largest works in the collection — 120 × 90 cm (47 × 35 in), oil on canvas mounted on a deep stretcher. At this scale, the figures occupy a room. They don’t hang on a wall so much as inhabit it.
Juanjo Sáez is a Barcelona-based author, illustrator and animation director with over 30 years of professional practice. His animated feature Heavies Tendres has won awards at Fantasia Montreal, Animest Bucharest and Anilogue Budapest. His book El Arte has been translated into six languages; its original notebooks were acquired by the MNAC (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya). He has published with Random House, Penguin, Astiberri and Planeta, and has held a weekly column in Diari Ara since its founding in 2010.
