There is something refreshing about an artist who makes a self-portrait and names its emotional state without ambiguity. No heroism, no performance. Just the fact of being sad, drawn with markers on good paper, and offered to someone who might recognise the feeling.

Juanjo Sáez is a Barcelona-based author, illustrator and animation director with over 30 years of professional practice. His animated feature Heavies Tendres has won awards at Fantasia Montreal, Animest Bucharest and Anilogue Budapest. His book El Arte has been translated into six languages; its original notebooks were acquired by the MNAC (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya).

Hay algo refrescante en un artista que hace un autorretrato y nombra su estado emocional sin ambigüedad. Sin heroísmo, sin actuación. Solo el hecho de estar triste, dibujado con rotuladores sobre buen papel, y ofrecido a alguien que quizá reconozca la sensación.
